98% of people who lose weight gain it back within a year or 2 and then some.
And,
9 out of 10 women, when you poll them, are unhappy with their appearance.
We are told by the world of experts, media, and what we read in books, that we should just have more willpower and discipline and self-control when it comes to what we put in our mouths and that really we just need to eat less and exercise more.
Don’t you think if it was that simple then we would have a far better result than just a 2 % success rate?
It usually goes something like this….
We make a decision to start on some plan in an effort to be healthy and we think I’m going to do keto, low carb, intermittent fasting, the HCT diet, or not eat animals or only eat animals or any other diet that is trending right now.
So, we think yes, this time it’s going to be different I’m finally going to get the result that I’m looking for after all my friend, or work colleague followed it and lost a bazillion kilos and so yes this ones right for me.
And then we start on the journey and most of us can follow the plan for a week, 2 weeks, even 3 weeks and then something happens a curveball and a curveball can be a fun curveball like a friends wedding or a holiday or an anniversary or it can be some sort of adversity striking like we get sick, or someone we know gets sick, or there is a global pandemic, or loss of a loved one, or loss of job and then what happens is we start to slip back into old patterns and then we hit a plateau or even gain a little back and then we kind of tell ourselves well maybe this wasn’t for me after all , or there is something wrong with my metabolism, or hormones and we kind of just resign ourselves to the way things are.
In other words I am flawed on some level and something in me is broken and I need to fix it.
And underneath all of this the deep-seated feelings of failure are triggered which has a knock-on effect to the way we feel about ourselves and our self esteem and confidence.
For me personally, I have been in the health and wellness industry for over 20years now and this is nothing new
And this dieting and restriction strategy which just feeds inner feelings of failure and not good enough is just not the way to go about things. Every year there are countless numbers of diet books released based on a new method or a rehashed method labeled under a new name.
If all of the diets out there worked over the long run, then would obesity and all of its health complications be the global epidemic that it is?
It’s not our fault whatever the challenge we are facing when it comes to our health and our bodies. We have trained to look for the answers outside of ourselves in dieting and restriction and following strict rules.
You see the answers to this riddle are within.
It is rooted in our biology and also our mind.
You see the things that make us reach for food and drink are our emotions.
This is why things like chewing gum or brushing your teeth after you eat or go do something else won’t work in the long run.
They may work initially because of the high level of motivation and determination but over the long run until we explore what’s inside of ourselves it won’t work.
This is why so many lose weight and gain it all back again.
The thing is we will either want to reward or relieve ourselves.
“I’ve had a tough time with my boss today.” – I feel like a glass of wine.
I’m feeling really uncertain about my job underneath it all and that can lead to wanting to self soothe with chocolate, or chips, or order some pizza in order to make us feel safe.
I’m feeling lonely can be relieved by reaching for our favourite comfort foods.
