Discover How Toxic Your Liver Is…

We live in beautiful Sydney, with fantastic weather and great beaches. There are friends and family to enjoy, with plenty of upcoming Christmas and New Year cheer……So what’s about to happen to your liver?

To most, the Christmas holiday period means BBQ’s and Beers or a nice glass of wine… kicking back after another year of hard work. To most Australians New Years Day will mean a hangover… a day spent sleeping on the couch, eating naughty foods and declaring to whoever will listen that “Never Again…”

So whilst you’re resting on the couch, what’s happening to your liver?

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body and performs more functions than any other organ. The health and vitality of all the body systems depends to a large extent on the health and vitality of the liver. It is the body’s most complex and useful organ.

The liver is a major blood reservoir: filtering out toxins, it manufactures bile to digest fats and prevent constipation. The liver participates in functions associated with the cardiovascular system, digestive system, excretory system and metabolism. It assists with the production of energy, aids digestion, stores vital vitamins and is the body’s major detoxifier. It also metabolises proteins and carbohydrates and secretes hormones and enzymes.

It must also be remembered that if the liver is not functioning properly then toxins will manifest themselves elsewhere in the body. A toxic liver or liver dysfunction can cause general depression, unexplained weight gain, great tiredness, poor digestion nausea, dizziness, high cholesterol levels, liver spots on the skin or you may seem to sigh a lot.

To find out if you have a liver dysfunction tick the relevant symptoms which apply to you.

  • Anxiety
  • Weight gain
  • Digestive problems/ IBS
  • Nausea
  • Constipation/ diarrhoea
  • Depression
  • Constant tiredness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • PMT/ Moody at cycle
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Bad breath
  • Furry tongue
  • Dizziness
  • Jaundice
  • Liver spots
  • Itching skin
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Cholesterol
  • Allergies

If you have ticked 3 or more then your liver needs help.  Five or more ticks indicate a more serious problem. But even with one tick you should consult your Naturopath.

Since any toxic substance can harm the liver and since most of us are continually bombarded by toxins in our food and water and in the air, it is generally realized that none of us has a truly healthy liver. The good news is that the liver has amazing rejuvenate powers, and can continue to function even when as many as 80% of its cells are damaged.

A clean, functioning liver produces natural antihistamines to keep immunity high, neutralizes and destroys toxins in the body, cleanses the blood and discharges waste, breaks down fat and helps excrete fat and cholesterol, helps form and store red blood cells and iron, aids digestion, maintains hormone balance and remarkably enough regenerates its own damaged tissue.

You may be asking, “How could my liver become toxic?” Any one of the following can cause your liver to become ill.

  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Coke or Pepsi
  • Bleach
  • Sprayed Chemicals
  • Christmas Parties
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarette Smoking
  • Petrol or Diesel
  • Processed Foods
  • Drugs
  • Heavy Metals
  • Trans-Fatty Acids
  • Pesticides
  • Chlorinated Water
  • Emotional Stress
  • Herbicides

If you have ticked 3 or more your liver may well be toxic.  Five or more ticks indicate a more serious problem. But even with one tick your liver may still need help.

Correct nutrition is important to the health of the liver. A liver cleansing or detoxifying diet is highly recommended to maximise its activity. A detoxifying diet high in alkalising fresh foods and vegetable proteins and low in dairy and bad fats is recommended.

So if you would like to have more energy, improve joint and muscle aches and pain, rid cholesterol from your body naturally and release depression and anxiety from your life then to improve liver function is important. For some it’s important to start to neutralise the body and to cleanse the digestive system before cleansing the liver. To do this properly needs some help as certain pitfalls can cause hiccups for the unknowing participant.

For example the digestive system is the first system or filter in the body with the liver being the second. These two are in a row for a very important reason. The digestive system is required to do much of the filtering before the liver. If the digestive filter is partially clogged then the toxins are entering the liver too quickly and these toxins are not broken down into small pieces which can cause further liver damage. Therefore in about 90% of cases it’s important to cleanse the digestive system first.

If this is not completed first with the digestive system still clogged and you try to cleanse the liver you will not receive any benefit in the long run as the digestive system is still sending toxins straight through to the liver. To work out the priority of which filter needs help first is of primary importance and to do this within the clinic we use a specified test called Hemaview, which will help both of us to identify the causes.
